Wrath from Above

Aug 13, 19:51

It’s been a week since things got back to normal after the storm rolled through. I should say mostly back to normal, as there are still a few streets without working streetlights– and I’m guessing there are plenty of refrigerators that are emptier now than they were before they were left to fend for themselves in the August heat.

But the most important things is that electric power service ha been restored to the quarter to half a million homes that lost it. It’s eerie to see whole darkened blocks in the city. The night after the storm our power was still out, and I went into the alley and onto the avenue and took some pictures. Something I hadn’t done in a while. I slowly relearned all the lessons from years ago when I would take a 35mm camera and tripod somewhere to shoot something in the dark. It was always long exposure shots then, and on this night it was too.

I didn’t have a cable release with me, so I had to hold my breath and try not move the camera too much when releasing the shutter. It brought back all kinds of memories from high school and college and other times when it’s just been me and a camera, stealing light from the world for our own selfish purposes. Even though there wasn’t a lot that night, there was still plenty to go around. I’ll have some for you to see soon.
