Freelance week one
Feb 14, 17:24
So it’s been less than a week that I’ve worked for myself and my sleep cycle has already regressed back to where it was while I was in college. Get up around noon. Work ‘til 8, 9, or 10. Go to bed at 3 or 4. Repeat.
I keep telling myself it’s not a big deal: “As long as I get my work done it doesn’t matter what time I get up or go to bed.” Maybe. It doesn’t help when your girlfriend is an insomniac who routinely goes to bed after the sun comes up. Or when you make a pot of French press coffee at midnight and drink it even though you’ve decided it’s a bad idea in the time it took you to make it. (I learned today that for French presses, you need uniform large granules, not small ones as I had previously thought.)
I miss the coffee machine at the old job. Basic, consistent, diner-grade coffee from an industrial grade machine- just like you can find in any diner. I was told that type of machine is extra consistent because the water is heated in advance of passing through the grounds, and not just on the way there. I don’t know how this true this is, but I still want one anyway.
When word got around the office at my old job, someone stopped me in a hallway and said ‘We could have built an empire around you.” I wanted to know what sort of empire and who would be ruling. But instead I shrugged awkwardly and kind of half-smiled. I didn’t know what to say. Who says that kind of thing anyway.
