Welcome to infinite expanse, the web site of Jim Benton.

I'm a super secret spy and there's nothing anyone can do about it

So Google decided to abide by China’s laws and censor their search results. Fine. I’m not about to get into whether or not such an action violates the company’s mottos of ‘do no evil’. I can see valid arguments on both sides, and Google is already censoring results in many other countries to comply with local laws.

The negative effect censorship can have on society is worth considering. Ignorance is never a solution; relying on it to repress undesirable issues will only perpetuate many of the problems we are facing today and delay progress in areas such as human rights, environmental issues, and peace.

Links are worth much more than words. Compare a Google search for ‘Tienanmen Square’: Standard results, and now with filtering.

It only gets better. Google image search for ‘Tienanmen Square’: Standard . Filtered.

These searches were made using the Google China portal, but you can receive the same filtering by adding ‘&cr=countryCN’ to the end of any Google query string. The difference is frightening.

Another good one is ‘china human rights’.
